The California Clean Fuel Reward amount has been temporarily reduced to $0.
See FAQs for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

When the reward amount reduction period ends, new program details will be added to the website.

The reward amount reduction was based on the goal to sustainably maintain a robust and impactful reward amount, which was challenged by several factors, including:

  • Higher than estimated growth of electric vehicle sales in California, which have drawn down reward funds more quickly than expected
  • Less revenue than initially estimated from the sale of LCFS credits
  • The program’s legal obligation to maintain at least $10 million in program funds in reserve

The program will continue to be monitored and restored if/when conditions change.

The reward amount and program rules are subject to change. The California Clean Fuel Reward team will continue to evaluate all aspects of the EV marketplace in California and make any adjustments necessary to ensure the future sustainability of the program.

New retailer enrollments in the program are not being accepted. Enrollment will reopen if/when the program is restored. Retailers who are currently enrolled in the program will not need to re-enroll.

The vehicles listed are Battery Electric (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) light-duty vehicles with a minimum battery capacity of five (5) kilowatt-hours. Vehicle must be street legal and must currently be on sale in the state of California by entities registered with the California DMV. “Light-duty vehicle” is defined as a vehicle that is rated at 8,500 pounds or less GVWR. This shall include “demo” vehicles that are sold to a customer as new and have never been titled, as well as demo/rental vehicles that a retailer purchases and registers the vehicle in California. The Electric Vehicles page is frequently updated.

There are many incentives, rewards, rebates, and tax credits available to people who purchase or lease electric vehicles, including discounts on chargers and electricity rates—you may even be eligible for HOV lane access. For details, see EV Incentives.
